SIG Membership Application

The Oncology Nursing Society (ONS) is a national organization of more than 33,000 registered nurses and other healthcare professionals dedicated to excellence in patient care, teaching, research and education in the field of oncology. A prime goal of ONS is to provide a network of peer support and exchange for oncology nurses. To do so, ONS introduced a formal structure of Special Interest Groups (SIG) to facilitate networking of ONS members in an identified subspecialty or interest area. The Transcultural Nursing Issues SIG was established in 1989.

Transcultural Nursing Issues SIG Mission Statement

The mission of the Transcultural Nursing Issues (TNI) SIG is to foster excellence in oncology nursing by promoting, investigating, and disseminating information related to transcultural issues that have an impact on patients, familites and the health care team.

Goals

  • Develop strategies that increase the knowledge base of nurses working with patients from multicultural backgrounds.
  • Increase resources that will ensure the continued growth and strength of the SIG's leadership and members.

Activities

The TNI SIG actively supports the work of ONS in developing a multiculturally competent Society through special projects such as collaborative newsletters with other SIGs and submission of culturally relevant topics for ONS educational events. They are also working to identify and implement strategies for recruiting members and increasing the involvement of individuals interested in transcultural nursing issues.

Benefits/Communication

The SIG meets once per year during the ONS Annual Congress. TNI SIG leaders communicate regularly with SIG members through written communiques and through a newsletter. The newsletter features timely articles on topics related to transcultural nursing issues, and reports on SIG projects and activities.

Membership Requirements

All SIG members must be members in good standing of the national Oncology Nursing Society. ONS members receive one free SIG membership. Additional SIG memberships are $15 each.
